Montana, east, Sunset over the Powder River Hills and Basin. A staff member at the BLM office in Miles City told me that the Powder River Basin was his favorite area in east Montana for landscape scenery and I found the remote hills and river basin of this region definitely worth visiting. As in many areas of east Montana that have forests and hills, I found this one no exception when it came to pleasant hiking. The somewhat sparse forest and rolling hills provide a traversable landscape that invites exploration. There are a few small BLM wilderness study areas that can be hard to find and its a mixture of Federal, State, Tribal and private lands. Good maps are helpful.
