Idaho, south central, Textures and forms carved into basalt over a ten thousand year time span by the Big Wood River..It's a fairly strenuous hike of about 5 miles through some of the best formations in Black Magic Canyon that requires boulder scrambling and a little climbing. It isn't necessary to hike the whole thing, some good navigation reveals that there are access points along the way. Geologists estimate that it took ten thousand years for the river to carve these unique rock sculptures into the volcanic basalt in south central Idaho. The sculpted forms resemble sandstone formations in the slot canyons of the southwest but are unique in shape due to the hardness of the stone.

It's advisable to say the least to call the Big Wood Canal Company before venturing into the canyon. (208) 886-2331 They control the water from this area for irrigation and a raging torrent released up stream would resemble a flash flood of the south west and would be deadly.
